The SNAT-634-PAC main and pilot exciter may be driven by a spindle or by a motor alone. Direct drive exciters are usually preferred because they maintain the operating unit system and the excitation is not affected by external interference.
The SNAT-634-PAC main exciter is rated at about 400 V and its capacity is about 0.5% of the alternator’s capacity. Turbo alternator exciters fail very frequently because of their high speed, so a separate motor driven exciter is provided as a backup exciter.
