GE Grid Solutions has introduced a new generation of Hydran M2-X monitoring equipment for dissolved gases in transformer oil, designed to enhance monitoring capabilities by extending sensor life, thereby reducing the risk of unplanned downtime and improving the reliability and economy of the grid. The device continuously monitors gas and humidity levels and is compatible with GE’s Asset Performance Management (APM) software for fleet-level deployment and management.

With a compact design, no moving parts and low maintenance costs, the Hydran M2-X supports a wide range of transformer oil types, including standard mineral insulating oils and new natural and synthetic estersester-based fluids. It can be used not only as a conventional composite gas sensor, but also as a standalone hydrogen sensor, while tracking the moisture in the oil, taking readings in %RH and ppm.

In addition, the Hydran M2-X is easily upgraded in the field to accept analog signals and monitor other critical transformer parameters such as top oil temperature and load current. It also has a built-in humidity sensor that provides a measurement of moisture in the oil, which is crucial for identifying paper degradation and gasket leaks. The device is compatible with GE’s Perception™ software for easy download, trend analysis and analysis of transformer health data.

The Hydran M2-X also offers a UL certified HazLoc version (Model M2-X-HZ) for installation on transformers in hazardous sites designated as Class I Zone 2. The main advantages of this device include small size, no moving parts, low maintenance costs, support for APM software analysis, suitable for transformer condition monitoring using mineral insulating oils or ester liquids, and the ability to monitor additional parameters and use IEEe-based mathematical models to further understand changes in transformer condition by connecting sensors
