A new machine’s job is to place test tubes on racks. To achieve this, bulk tubes are placed individually on a conveyor belt and pushed into sample racks. It is critical that the tubes go into the rack the correct way. The cap sealing each vial must be on top. However, the orientation of the tubes on the delivery line is random, sometimes with the cap on the right and sometimes on the left. The shape and material of blood tubes make measuring them problematic. They are round, transparent and filled with varying amounts of fluid. Outlines are ill-defined and lack planes. These are significant challenges to most measurement principles. However, the customer was not looking for a solution based on laborious and expensive camera systems or profile scanners, but a method that delivered results quickly and reliably and at the same time economically.
