The transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry has brought a huge demand for high-end industrial cameras, and machine vision has become an essential part of the market. So, what kind of CIS sensor is needed for machine vision applications?
Jin Fangqi pointed out that both industrial intelligence and the development of emerging machine vision applications face a common application scenario, that is to capture high-speed moving objects, such as the precise obstacle avoidance needs under high-speed flight, intelligent assembly line fast moving targets and so on. Currently, the CMOS image sensor of the camera can be exposed in two ways, Rolling shutter and Global Shutter. For example, when photographing the same fast passing car, the Rolling shutter is exposed in line scanning. There is a certain time delay in this process, so it will lead to the “jelly effect” of imaging, and the resulting mapping effect is deformed. Therefore, in machine vision, the global shutter image sensor has a greater advantage because there is no distortion in the imaging.
According to reports, Stiver has been developing Global Shutter technology since 2017 and released the world’s first image sensor product based on the BSI pixel architecture + global shutter in 2018, which has been applied to industrial cameras. In 2019, the technology layer related to Global Shutter debuted as an opening paper at the ISSCC San Francisco International Solid-State Circuit Summit 2019, and the SmartGS® series SC132GS was launched the same year with this latest technology. At present, Steway’s SmartGS® global exposure products have excellent market performance in UAV, sweeping robot, ITS intelligent transportation, vehicle-mounted DMS/OMS and home/business robots and other emerging machine vision fields, but also occupy a majority of the market in UAV obstacle avoidance field.
In addition to global exposure, the application of machine vision also has very high requirements on the performance and KPI of CIS sensors, including higher signal-to-noise ratio, higher frame rate, higher resolution, higher sensitivity, dynamic range and lower power consumption. “The shutter is primarily used to control the effective exposure time of the sensor, and for common imaging applications, the larger the shutter time range, the better. “But this is not so good for machine vision applications where you need to capture rapidly moving objects. For industrial and emerging machine vision applications, the faster the shutter speed, the better.”
He said that the Stillway SmartGS® technology meets the high performance requirements of CIS in machine vision. First of all, the second generation of SmartGS® products achieve higher resolution, which is a successful breakthrough in the field of large-size and large-resolution Global Shutter chips by domestic enterprises. It is reported that the image sensor with good sensitivity is generally based on BSI technology, but the integration of global exposure and BIS technology is more difficult. To date, Stever is one of the first companies in the world to realize global exposure technology based on the BSI process.
Secondly, the professional R & D team of Stever has excellent IC design capability, and the designed chips have excellent performance in terms of sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio.
Thirdly, the PixGain technology of Stiver controls the capture of details in high-light scenes and improves the capture of details in low-light scenes through two sets of conversion Gain circuits built into the sensor circuit, namely Low Gain and High Gain.
Finally, Stevi’s low-power reading technology can reduce analog and digital power consumption through internal circuit design optimization.
