The MVME133 is specified, designed and tested to operate reliably over an intake air temperature range of 0C to 55C with forced air cooling at speeds typically achievable by a 71CFM axial fan. Temperature qualification is performed in a standard Motorola VME Systems chassis. Twenty-five watt load boards were inserted into two card slots, one on each side, adjacent to the board under test to simulate a high power density system configuration. An assembly of three axial fans, each rated at 71 CFM, mounted directly under the VME card cage. The input air temperature is measured between the fan assembly and the card cage, where the input airflow first encounters the module being tested. The test software is executed when the module is subjected to a change in ambient temperature. The case temperature of critical high power density integrated circuits is monitored to ensure that component supplier specifications are not exceeded.
While the exact airflow required for cooling depends on ambient air temperature and the type, number and location of circuit boards and other heat sources, adequate cooling is typically achieved with 10CFM and 150LFM of airflow over the module. Less airflow is required to cool the module in an environment with a lower maximum ambient. Under more favorable thermal conditions, the module can be reliably operated at temperatures above 55 degrees Celsius with increased airflow. It is important to note that in addition to the rated CFM of the air mover, there are several factors that determine the actual volume and velocity of air flowing through the module.
