POSITAL’s new generation of magnetoelectric absolute rotary encoder IXARC series adds SSI communication interface products.
SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) is a communication protocol used in a wide variety of sensors, including encoders. SSI is a serial communication system that connects sensors point-to-point to a PLC or microprocessor through the RS-422 communication standard. SSI can provide high transmission rates and support transmission distances up to 1200 meters. (Maximum baud rate depends on transmission distance) Most major PLC manufacturers support SSI protocol.
Like other IXARC encoders from POSITAL’s NEXTGEN program, the new SSI series is equipped with an advanced TMR (tunnel reluctance) sensor for angular position measurement in a single turn. TMR sensors are more stable and have lower temperature sensitivity. Compared to the previous generation of Hall components, TMR sensors are more sensitive to small changes in the magnetic field, opening the door to a new generation of magnetoelectric encoders with higher single-turn resolution of 18 bits. Another key innovation in the new generation of IXARC encoders is a new self-developed ASIC that supports battery-free multi-turn counting. Each time the encoder rotates the shaft, the Wiegand sensor connected to the ASIC provides a signal pulse and enough current to activate the counting circuit in the ASIC. Through this system, even in the case of power failure, every rotation of the main engine shaft can be accurately recorded in the non-volatile memory of the encoder. Batteries are no longer needed for the number of turns stored.
The housing of the new generation IXARC encoder has also been improved, and a compact welded housing has also been introduced. In addition to axial and radial outlet directions, 45° oblique outlet versions are available for installation in narrow environments.
POSITAL’s SSI interface encoder is a programmable encoder, resolution, rotation direction, code size and preset values can be easily implemented through POSITAL’s programming tool UBIFAST.
