July 19, 2023 – onsemi (NASDAQ: ON), a leader in smart power and intelligent sensing technology, and BorgWarner (NYSE: BorgWarner), a global leader in providing innovative and sustainable automotive solutions BWA) to expand strategic cooperation in silicon carbide (SiC) with a total agreement value of over $1 billion. Borgwarner plans to integrate On’s EliteSiC 1200 V and 750 V power devices into its VIPER power module. For a long time, the two parties have been engaged in strategic cooperation in a wide range of product areas, including EliteSiC devices.
On offers high-performance EliteSiC technology while maintaining the high standards of quality, reliability and supply stability required by the electric vehicle main drive market. On Semiconductor has decades of experience in the design, development and manufacturing of power semiconductor products proven for high-volume automotive applications.
“First and foremost, On’s continued strategic investments to accelerate the expansion of SiC capacity throughout its end-to-end supply chain give us confidence that we can meet the growing demand for our solutions now and in the future,” said Stefan Demmerle, vice president, president and general manager, Power Drive Systems, BorgWarner.
Borgwarner’s silicon carbide main drive inverters offer higher energy efficiency, better cooling performance, faster charging speeds and a more compact package than comparable solutions. Borgwarner’s adoption of EliteSiC technology in its solution will benefit from higher power density and energy efficiency, which will increase the range of electric vehicles and improve overall performance.
Simon Keeton, executive vice president and general manager of ON’s Power Solutions business group, said: “The integration of EliteSiC technology in the main drive inverter improves mileage per gallon (MPGe), which helps alleviate range anxiety – one of the major barriers to wider adoption of electric vehicles. “With support from chip to system level and a proven track record of execution, On Semiconductor will be able to provide BorgWarner with industry-leading SIC-based solutions faster to market.”
