Siemens and FREYR Battery will collaborate on the scale and sustainable production of batteries
The collaboration is based on the Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform
FREYR will apply Siemens Xcelerator’s preferred digital portfolio to design and operate its planned gigafactory in Norway and the United States
Siemens, Nvidia and Amazon Cloud Technologies are merging the physical and digital worlds to create an immersive industrial meta-universe experience for the FREYR Gigafactory
Siemens and FREYR have officially entered into a strategic partnership. Siemens will serve as FREYR’s preferred supplier for automation and digital technologies to help it scale up production and maximize plant efficiency.
Scale up battery production with Siemens technology
FREYR plans to equip its planned gigafactory in Norway and the United States with the Siemens Industrial Operations X portfolio. Industrial Operations X offers a broad range of products and services for industrial operations, enabling the integration of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) to set new benchmarks in the industrial sector.
The collaboration between Siemens and FREYR will cover the entire battery design and manufacturing process, covering the design, planning and simulation of production lines, the design and simulation of products, and the automation of the entire production process. Siemens will provide FREYR with a variety of solutions from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, including product lifecycle management (PLM), Manufacturing Execution systems (MES), industrial edge computing and IT/OT interconnection tools.
With Industrial Operations X, FREYR is able to better connect design and manufacturing, further scaling up production. This will help FREYR accelerate the construction of the Gigafactory, improve the availability of high-performance affordable EV battery solutions and energy storage systems, and accelerate the transformation of the automotive industry and the power grid.
Tom Einar Jensen, co-founder and CEO of FREYR, said: “We are proud to partner with a global company like Siemens. Our collaboration is based on the common goal of developing efficient and sustainable battery solutions quickly and at scale. We look forward to leveraging Siemens’ world-leading automation and digitalization expertise, as well as Amazon Cloud Technologies and Nvidia’s original capabilities in battery design and manufacturing to meet the world’s growing demand for batteries.” Ai and digitally enhanced electrochemical cell design and manufacturing processes are the next frontier in battery production, and our collaboration is an important step in that direction.”
Siemens further consolidates its technologically advanced position in the battery market
With this strategic agreement, Siemens expands its presence in the battery manufacturing industry. Siemens has recently signed a number of cooperation agreements with leading industry players, highlighting its deep expertise in the dynamic and fast-growing market of battery manufacturing.
“Speed, scale and sustainability, these are the three goals that battery manufacturers are pursuing. That’s what Siemens is good at.” Cedrik Neike, member of the Board of Management of Siemens AG and CEO of Siemens Digital Industries, said: “This collaboration reinforces our important position as a key partner for global battery manufacturers.”
As part of their strategic collaboration, Siemens and Nvidia joined forces to create a display area during Hannover MESse to highlight the transformative potential of the industrial metaverse. Siemens has developed a custom application based on the NVIDIA Omniverse platform to demonstrate the next-generation cloud-based FREYR factory digital twin created using AWS IoT TwinMaker. It demonstrates how companies like FREYR can intuitively experience, leverage and interact with the full range of digital twins covering the entire product, production and service lifecycle in a high-fidelity, immersive environment to make better and faster engineering decisions. The model integrates operational data from the plant, stereoscopic representations of buildings, plants, machinery and equipment, ergonomic and safety information, detailed production processes, robots and autonomous guided vehicles, and simulations of products and production. This display area is full of integrated applications of the Siemens Xcelerator and NVIDIA Omniverse platforms.
“By combining Siemens’ expertise in industrial automation and digital twin technologies with Nvidia AI computing and Omniverse, companies like FREYR will be able to take full advantage of the industrial metaverse.” Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and Simulation Technologies at NVIDIA, said: “By establishing a new connection between the Siemens Xcelerator and NVIDIA Omniverse platforms, digital and AI-enabled automation for manufacturers around the world will reach a whole new level. Significantly increase efficiency, agility and innovation.”
“By working together, Siemens and Amazon Cloud Technologies are making it easier for industrial customers to use cloud services such as Siemens Xcelerator and Amazon Cloud Technologies WS IoT TwinMaker to improve manufacturing insights, automation and connectivity.” Bill Vass, vice president of engineering at Amazon Cloud Technologies, said: “By working together, we have found new ways to use cloud and virtualization technologies to solve real-world problems such as electric vehicle battery production. Working with an industry-leading partner like Siemens will help companies of all sizes turn industrial complexity into a competitive advantage.”
