Qatar Energy and Chevron Phillips Chemical announced a final investment decision to build the world’s largest integrated polymer facility, the Golden Triangle Polymers Plant, in Texas, USA, for $8.5 billion.
Emerson participates in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Golden Triangle Polymer Project as a key automation supplier. Located 180 km east of Houston, Texas, the plant, funded by Qatar Energy and Chevron Phillips Chemical, will be the world’s largest integrated polymer plant. The project includes a 2.08 million tonne/year ethylene cracking unit and two 2 million tonne/year high density polyethylene (HDPE) units, which are used to produce durable goods and basic packaging to protect food and keep medical supplies sterile. Production is expected to begin in 2026.
Using the latest greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction technologies, the project will reduce emissions by approximately 25% compared to similar facilities in the United States and Europe. Emerson will provide automation technology, software and analytical tools for the Plantweb™ digital ecosystem.
David Godard, Golden Triangle Polymer Project, said:
“Emerson’s digital automation technology, industrial software portfolio and extensive energy experience enable us to operate projects of this scale safely and reliably, optimize energy use and reduce emissions.”
The Golden Triangle Polymer project and the recent Ras Laffan petrochemical plant in Qatar, both world-class ethane cracking plants, have chosen Emerson’s digital automation technology, software and expertise to operate safer, smarter and more sustainable.
Ron Martin, president of Emerson Americas, said:
“We are privileged to help Chevron Phillips Chemical and Qatar Energy build world-class petrochemical facilities.”
Emerson will provide integrated process control and safety systems to reduce operational complexity with advanced predictive technology and mitigate project risk through the DeltaV™ Distributed Control and Safety Instrumentation System and Rosemount Gas Analyzer and Chromatograph solutions. Operator training, energy management, safety analysis and operational optimization were performed using Emerson’s Mimic™ and AspenTech HYSYS® simulation software. Emerson’s AgileOps operations management software and alarm management services help employees monitor and maintain security, alarm and control systems to improve process and operational integrity.
