Honeywell will work with Zhejiang Jiaao Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. to build a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel production base in Lingang Industrial Zone, Guanyun County, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, to expand domestic sustainable aviation fuel production capacity, promote carbon reduction in the aviation industry through innovative technologies, and help China achieve the goal of “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality”.
The project uses Honeywell UOP’s Ecofining™ process technology, catalysts and equipment to produce sustainable aviation fuel from kitchen waste oil and animal fat. When completed, the project is expected to be one of the largest sustainable aviation fuel installations in China using Ecofining™ process technology and the first to be put into production. In addition, Honeywell UOP will provide support during the plant design, site construction and project operation phases to help bring the project into production.
As a digital industrial high-tech company, about 60% of Honeywell’s new product research and development is focused on improving customers’ environmental performance and social benefits, and is committed to working with partners to shape a sustainable future and contribute to China’s ‘two-carbon’ goal and high-quality development. We are very pleased to cooperate with Jiaao Environmental Protection. With Honeywell’s advanced commercial technology and mature solutions, and Jiaao Environmental Protection’s more than 10 years of waste oil deep processing experience, the two sides will build Jiaao Environmental Lianyungang project into a new benchmark for domestic sustainable aviation fuel production base, helping the aviation industry to reduce carbon emissions.
As one of the important means to promote the transformation of energy structure and achieve the goal of “double carbon” in China, the biomass new energy industry has huge development prospects. As we all know, the core bottleneck of the development of biomass new energy industry is the procurement channel of waste oil raw materials. Through the accumulation of supplier channels in the past two decades, Jiaao Environmental Protection has reached strategic supply cooperation with many domestic waste oil suppliers. Abundant waste oil procurement resources and channels provide reliable raw material guarantee for the smooth implementation of this project. We are proud to partner with Honeywell to help meet the aviation industry’s growing demand for sustainable fuels and to help reduce carbon emissions.”
Honeywell UOP’s Ecofining™ process technology is the first technology to be used in the primary production of sustainable aviation fuel for commercial aviation, helping to pioneer sustainable aviation fuel production.
Sustainable aviation fuels produced by the Ecofining™ process using feedstocks such as waste oil, fat and grease can be blended 1:1 with petroleum-based aviation fuels for commercial use on a large scale without requiring any technical changes to the aircraft and meeting all key flight specifications. Ecofining™ technology is used in the majority of 100% bio-based renewable feedstock diesel production plants and in all authorized dedicated renewable aviation fuel production worldwide.
In January 2022, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Transport jointly issued the 14th Five-Year Civil Aviation Development Plan, which clearly proposed a sound eco-friendly green development system, guided by the realization of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and paid more attention to the strategic supporting role of scientific and technological innovation.
The Civil Aviation Administration also pointed out in the “14th Five-Year Plan” Civil Aviation Green Development Special Plan that it is necessary to vigorously promote the decarbonization of the industry, strengthen the application of advanced and applicable technologies, and promote breakthroughs in the commercial application of sustainable aviation fuel.
As early as 2011, Honeywell’s sustainable aviation fuel technology has been applied in China. On October 28 of that year, Air China, petrochina, Boeing and Honeywell UOP jointly implemented China’s first aviation sustainable biofuel demonstration flight at Beijing Capital International Airport.
Air China has successfully carried out an in-service Boeing 747-400 aircraft loaded with aviation biofuel co-produced by petrochina and Honeywell UOP at Beijing Capital International Airport, marking the beginning of the development of biofuel for civil aviation in China.
