Non-profit organizations promote global social justice
Mendix selected organizations to participate in the MxHacks Challenge based on a series of criteria, including the organization’s mission and vision and the role low-code technologies can play in supporting the organization’s future growth. By selecting real-world use cases from nonprofits for this hackathon, Mendix aims to create a platform and community that everyone can participate in. Mendix wants to use hackathons to help disadvantaged people get educated, integrate into new environments, and provide them with shelter and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. The move also demonstrates Mendix’s core value of empowering citizen developers of all backgrounds to innovate with low code.
New Hope Community Services (New Hope CS) is a growing organization. Dedicated to meeting the needs of the homeless community in Singapore, its core services are providing shelter, guidance and employment support to the displaced and vulnerable. New Hope CS currently operates four shelters in Singapore, serving individuals, families and male ex-convicts, It has also recently started to participate as an operator in Singapore’s Housing & Development Board’s (HDB) Joint Singles Scheme, managing 50 flats.
Andrew Khoo, CEO and founder of New Hope CS, said: “New Hope CS believes that everyone’s four basic needs – housing, food, health and clothing – should be met. With the development of Singapore society, our support for the homeless has become increasingly important. In addition to a range of programmes to help people find accommodation when they need it most, it is also necessary to help them find ways to reintegrate into society and build their confidence in the future. We look forward to working with Mendix and the low-code developer community at MxHacks to build new service applications that will help us fulfill our mission of bringing hope to the people we serve.”
Project Alianza aims to use technology and existing social networks to bridge the learning gap for school-age children in rural Central America. The organization also works to help disenfranchised groups and women take control of their educational rights so that they can reach their full potential.
Kristin Van Busum, CEO and founder of Project Alianza, said: “Our main focus is to promote literacy and healthy hygiene through offline and online systems. Our goal is to make a positive difference in people’s lives by providing valuable education, such as providing learning opportunities to people in rural areas without access to the Internet and with limited learning resources, opening the door for them to connect to the world. We believe technology is key to leveling the playing field for people living in the most remote parts of Central America. Together with Mendix and its community of low-code developers, we will help make education more accessible to children who need it most.”
Welcome App is a one-stop shop for people rebuilding their lives in a new country, helping newcomers build relationships with service providers, businesses, government agencies and locals to promote social integration in a scalable way. Newcomers can use the app to build social networks, learn the local language, find work and play, and recapture their old ways. Designed specifically for refugees and asylum seekers, the platform allows people to feel at home no matter where they are by simplifying the process of integrating into a new society.
Julius Weise, Founder and Director of Welcome App, said: “In recent years, we have learned widely about the challenges people face in building new lives and integrating into new societies. Therefore, we hope to help newcomers adapt to life in the new environment faster by providing them with a platform that includes an overview of government agencies, various types of information, summary of online and offline activities, online questions, and 1:1 online chat with locals. “We believe this partnership with Mendix and the low-code developer community will improve the quality of our services and expand the range of services we offer to new immigrants in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, so that they can feel a sense of belonging.”
