•ABB ArcSave® electromagnetic stirring technology improves the production efficiency and resource utilization of existing electric arc furnaces
• The electric arc furnace has a capacity of 100 tons and can produce carbon and stainless steel
• This order follows the installation of an ABB electromagnetic stirrer on another electric arc furnace in SeAH in 2018
South Korea Shiah 0190-25422 Changwon Special Steel Company has placed another order to purchase ABB ArcSave® electromagnetic agitator from global technology company ABB, which is planned to be used on electric arc furnace (EAF) in SHIah Changwon integrated special Steel plant.
ABB ArcSave Electromagnetic Stirring system SeAH will be used in Changwon Plant (Panorama)
Ranked among the world’s top 10 specialty steel producers, the plant produces 1.2 million tons of steel and 1 million tons of finished steel per year. Its high-quality stainless steel rods and wires are widely used in automotive, energy and shipbuilding.
ABB ArcSave
The ABB ArcSave purchased this time will be installed on a 100-ton electric arc furnace producing carbon steel and stainless steel. This technology is expected to improve the efficiency of EAF, reduce energy consumption, and reduce the overall operating cost of EAF. 0190-25422 According to the typical data of other ABB users, by using ABB ArcSave, users can improve their revenue rate by 1%, increase production by 5% to 7%, and reduce energy consumption by about 3% to 5%.
ABB’s technology can help users improve the metallurgical conditions of electric arc furnace melting. ABB’s electromagnetic stirring solutions have improved the operational performance of some large electric arc furnaces, while also helping customers reduce carbon emissions from existing steel production lines and new projects.
Eung-Sou Lee, director of Production at Seah Changwon Special Steel,
0190-25422 Through the previous cooperation with ABB, we have personally felt the advantages of ABB ArcSave products, and we hope to further improve the efficiency of our electric arc furnace steelmaking operations by cooperating again.
Zaeim Mehraban, Global Head of Metallurgical Products Sales at ABB, said: “We are very pleased that SEachang Special Steel has once again chosen to partner with ABB, which highlights the positive impact ABB ArcSave has had on the production of high alloy steel, including the successful resolution of the difficult problem of bottom scaling, improved yield and steel output. It also reduces maintenance costs and downtime
The new order is SeAH’s second, and the equipment is scheduled to be put into service by the end of 2024. In 2018, Shiah Changyuan Special Steel ordered the first ABB ArcSave electromagnetic stirrer for its 70-ton electric arc furnace. By using electromagnetic stirring technology and replacing the existing bottom gas stirring unit, SeAH has successfully reduced the thickness of the bottom scale from a maximum of 1000 mm to less than 200 mm. The production efficiency of the electric arc furnace has 0190-25422 been increased by 5%-7%, the scrap treatment cost has been reduced by 70%-80%, the electricity consumption has been saved by 3%-4%, and the refractory maintenance cost has been reduced by 40%. Other effects include improved scrap feeding, better pool level control and accuracy of steel output.
Unlike other technologies, ArcSave does not make physical contact with the bottom of the arc furnace, providing an overall stirring effect with minimal maintenance requirements
ABB drawing
ABB ArcSave enhances smelting performance by reducing delamination during melting of large scrap steel by forcing convection without physical contact with the bottom of the arc furnace. The uniform distribution of temperature and chemical composition improves the operation of the electric arc furnace, while accelerating the melting of scrap steel and ferroalloys compared to natural convection.
