From “good for oneself” to “both the upper and the lower”
We will take a multi-pronged approach to reduce emissions across the value chain
DS200TBQCG1AAA Currently, Lenovo’s main strategies to reduce emissions include reducing the environmental impact of its products, using innovation to improve the sustainability of its production operations, and reducing emissions across its operations and value chain. As a global technology manufacturing enterprise, Lenovo Group has 35 manufacturing bases, more than 80 logistics distribution centers, operations in 180 markets, more than 2,000 suppliers, and a highly complex global supply chain network. Therefore, Lenovo Group, on the basis of its own emission reduction practice, pays more attention to the driving role of “chain master” enterprises and the spillover role of “net zero effect”, and achieves a 10-fold amplification of green benefits.
In order to reduce its own emissions, Lenovo Group promotes green carbon reduction from four aspects: product, energy, technology and logistics. In terms of green products, it promoted low-carbon product design and innovation to reduce the carbon footprint of products, applied closed-loop recycled plastics to 248 products, and launched five computer products containing Marine plastics and the world’s first carbon-neutral computer Yoga Slim 9i. In terms of green energy, to promote the optimization and adjustment of the energy structure, by improving energy efficiency, adopting new energy sources and developing renewable energy credits, the global total installed solar capacity as of the DS200TBQCG1AAA fiscal year 2021/22 is about 17 MW. In terms of green technology, increase the application of low-carbon technology innovation, warm water cooling solutions reduce power consumption by 40%, self-developed low temperature solder paste process reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions of electronic component assembly by 35%, and cryogenic nitrogen technology saves 0.05 degrees of electricity per unit gas volume. In terms of green logistics, we actively adopt sustainable fuel alternatives in air and sea transportation, such as cooperating with Kuehne + Nagel to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and working with Maersk to launch ecological transport solutions.
As a “chain master” enterprise, Lenovo Group undertakes the responsibility of promoting the emission reduction of industrial chain and supply chain enterprises, and promotes the construction of green supply chain through consensus reaching, strict control and management, training and empowerment. To this end, Lenovo Group specially launched the “Green development Scorecard”, from the performance evaluation, water resource reduction targets, greenhouse gas emission reduction, sustainable development report and other more than 30 indicators to strictly manage suppliers. Currently, 28% of suppliers have committed to join the Global Science-based Carbon Target Initiative or set science-based carbon targets. In the future, Lenovo Group plans to promote 95% of its suppliers to participate in scientific carbon reduction activities.
In terms of spillover effect, Lenovo Group releases “green energy” in the form of green consumption leadership, global collaborative carbon reduction, and external customer empowerment. Through low-carbon product innovation such as carbon-neutral computers and offshore plastic parts, we lead consumers to practice green consumption in 180 markets around the world. Actively promote the countries where global suppliers are located to reduce the global carbon footprint, DS200TBQCG1AAA and contribute Chinese enterprises to the global carbon reduction cause; Create scientific and replicable low-carbon manufacturing solutions for different industries, and provide intelligent manufacturing services for more than 300 third-party customers in automobile manufacturing, petroleum and petrochemical, energy and power, electronics manufacturing and other industries. Over the next decade, new IT technologies have the potential to help reduce global carbon emissions by 20 percent by empowering other industries, a 10-fold increase from the 2.3 percent share of global carbon emissions from companies in the digital information sector in 2020.
With its leading role in the field of supply chain decarbonization and emission reduction, Lenovo DS200TBQCG1AAA Group was awarded the 2022 “Supply Chain Decarbonization Pioneer Award” by the Global Environmental Information Research Center (CDP), and is the only company in China to receive the award. Previously, the group has been selected as one of the top 25 global supply chains by Gartner, a well-known data research agency, for eight consecutive times, and was once again included in the “World’s Most Admired Companies List” by Fortune magazine in 2023. At present, Lenovo Group’s MSCI ESG rating is AAA, the highest in the world.
