Grenoble, France, April 8, 2024 – Teledyne e2v, a company of Teledyne Technologies and a global innovator in imaging solutions, announced the launch of Topaz5D™, a full HD CMOS image sensor designed to combine 2D vision with 3D depth map generation. A single Topaz5D sensor for use in challenging lighting conditions provides 3D object depth information based on the detected contrast, making it ideal for a variety of logistics applications, AR/VR headsets, access control devices, household cleaning robots and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).
PXIe-5172 Topaz5D combines 2D vision with 3D depth map generation
Topaz5D combines a small 2.5µm global shutter pixel with a post-processed diffraction layer to create angle-sensitive pixels. This generates raw 3D Angle signal data, which is then processed by the 5D version SDK. Topaz5D is a 3D variant of Teledyne e2v’s popular Topaz 2M product, widely used in logistics/retail markets and smart factories.
Topaz5D has a resolution of 2 megapixels (1,920 x 1,080) and is currently available in both monochrome and color versions. Its tiny form factor (7.65 mm x 4.45 mm) allows it to be easily integrated into space-constrained optical engines or modules, consuming only PXIe-5172 200 mW of power when operating at full frame rates. It generates 3D depth maps and displays contrast details for any type of object, including objects that are black or very shiny, or seen through glass panels or transparent organic materials such as plexiglas or plastic bottles.
Unlike other 3D technologies that rely on scene lighting, Topaz5D can be used in a very diverse range of operating conditions, including indoor lighting or direct sunlight. In contrast to stereo vision solutions, only a single sensor plus a lens is required, without the need for complex dual-lens system calibration and without the risk of optical occlusion. In addition, compared to other 3D vision technologies, Topaz5D blows the dust in terms of cost of ownership.
Laurent Appercel, Senior Marketing Manager at Teledyne e2v, said: “Topaz5D has the unique ability to deliver sharp full HD 2D images in real time at high frame rates without delay, as well as detailed 3D depth maps based on contrast. 5D processing SDK integration on multiple SoC vendor platforms is also in place. All of these unmatched benefits come from a single sensor that can be deployed without lighting and with simplified hardware and software at a lower cost and minimal power consumption.”
