Mandatory first step – risk assessment
The team of experts from IdentPro and SICK first carried out a risk assessment in accordance with EN ISO 12100. The analysis addresses questions such as: Where are the dangers lurking for operators or employees? What could go wrong? How to deal with these dangers? The risk analysis shows that the special safety technologies required for free movement are beyond the requirements of ordinary homing systems. This includes, for example, the overall protection of the vehicle, as well as load protection and load detection through sensors. The experts constructed a security concept based on a holistic risk analysis.
SA9923a-E Certification support as a standalone service
The next step is to develop a certification and verification plan: What technology will be used, how will it be used, and how will it be verified? This is where you need a security control component, and the SICK security controller Flexi Soft is exactly what you need. However, Daniel Salas made it clear: “In principle, the support services we provide do not involve SICK’s products, but are based on current applicable standards. We see ourselves as consultants and will support the certification process regardless of the security technology used.”
Security professionals take personal responsibility
The subsequent certification process is carried out by SICK’s safety experts, who regularly attend the necessary training to master the new standards and requirements of the CE certification process. Daniel Salas stressed: “By signing the inspection records, these colleagues take personal responsibility as TUV certified machine safety experts. As a result, customers can rely on the validity of the certification process.”
SICK conducts safety-oriented design of hardware and software based on risk assessment and security concepts. In addition, SICK is supporting IdentPro in the configuration and programming of safety-related sensors and logic for free-moving autonomous vehicles. The correct safety features are then checked and confirmed through final verification and certification. Finally, the certification process is completed by reviewing a large number of documents. Under the premise of strict compliance with the machinery directive, safety experts are particularly concerned about the integrity of the scheme.
SA9923a-E The test of patience will pay great dividends
The entire CE marking process for IdentPro’s autonomous mobile robots took one year. It was a real test of owner Michael Wack’s patience. But he is clear: “We cannot accomplish this difficult task alone in such a short time.” SICK provides just the support we need. Finally, I was able to sign the CE Conformance Declaration with a clear conscience. Our users have also confirmed that the solutions we have developed together are very effective.”
