ABB’s REG216 is an advanced digital generator protection module designed to protect generators and transformers. Its modular hardware and software design provides flexible installation options and, through the combination of software libraries and hardware modules, allows simple adjustment of the main system size and the required protection scheme to suit a variety of applications. The REG216 software system provides a comprehensive library of protection features that users can select and adjust according to the size of a system and the required protection solution to achieve an economical solution.
The main features of the module include all-digital signal processing, continuous self-monitoring of the hardware, loop test procedures performed primarily by software, and setting parameters and recording Settings via a PC. The REG216 also displays measurements, event displays, confirmations and printouts, providing long-term stability and the ability to communicate and coordinate with the control station.
In terms of hardware, the REG216 consists of two main components, which are the main system interface and the parallel bus and related electronic units. The electronic unit is a plug-in design, mounted in a standard-sized equipment rack, with data exchange via a parallel bus, controlled and monitored by all available devices.
All protection functions of the REG216 operate through sampled primary system voltage and current, and the digital filter effectively inhibits DC components and harmonics to avoid interference, ensuring universal applicability, high accuracy and excellent long-term stability of the protection function.
The application areas of REG216 are very wide, and it is not only suitable for the protection of small, medium and large generators, but also for the protection of large motors, power transformers and feedlines. In addition, the control unit REG 216 performs data acquisition, control and monitoring functions in medium and high voltage substations.
It is worth noting that REG216 comes in two design versions: REG216 and REG216 Classic, which differ in terms of binary process connectivity. The REG216 uses E/A modules 216GD61a, while the REG216 Classic uses modules 216GE61/216GA61 and 216GA62. When choosing a REG216 module, users should choose according to their specific needs and system requirements.
