These modules share common functionality and morphology, and all interface with an Inter-Module Bus (IMB) that provides power and allows communication with TMR processors. In addition, all modules have field interfaces for connecting field-specific signals, and all modules feature a triple module redundancy (TMR) design.
The architecture of the ICS T8480 module includes the Host Interface Unit (HIU), Field Interface Unit (FIU), and Front Panel Unit (FPU). The HIU is the connection point between the module and the IMB, providing high-speed fault-tolerant communication, FCR interconnection bus, isolated serial data interface and other functions. Fius contain the necessary circuits to interface with the field I/O signals, each module has 3 FIUs, each FIUs contains a portion of 40 output driver circuits. The FPU contains the connectors, switches, logic, and LED indicators required for the front panel to provide status indications for each type of Trusted I/O module.
The analog output of the module provides a triple monitored fail-safe (6-element) drive channel, with two drive channels that provide a regulated current to the load even if one drive or the entire slice fails. In addition, the module has an output channel diagnostic function, which continuously monitors the output current and compares it with the current reported by each individual slice to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the output signal.
