The Allen-Bradley 1747-ASB is a remote I/O adapter module that is part of the SLC 500 system. It establishes communication links between SLC or PLC scanners and various 1746 I/O modules via remote I/O. A remote I/O link consists of a master device (that is, an SLC or PLC scanner) and one or more slave devices that act as adapters. The SLC or PLC image table gets the I/O module image directly from its case. For image maps, it supports discrete and block transfers. The 1747-ASB supports 1/2 slot, 1 slot, and 2 slot addressing for efficient use of images. It is installed in the case with the SLC 500 processor and scans for I/O in the case.

The backplane current of the 1747-ASB module is 375 mA at 5V and 0 mA at 24V. It has a minimum and maximum heat dissipation of 1.875W and can transmit I/O data over a distance of up to 3,040m. It supports 57.6K, 115.2K and 230.4K baud rates. It allows users to select image sizes for up to 32 logical groups and control up to 30 chassis slots. The 1747-ASB also provides non-volatile memory and extended node capabilities for up to 32 adapters. For wiring, a cable of Belden 9463 or a similar category must be used, which does not require any user programming. It uses a 6-pin Phoenix connector to connect remote I/O links and processors. The 1747-ASB module supports all SLC 501 I/O modules such as base module, resistor module, High speed counter module, etc. For troubleshooting and operations, it has three 7-segment displays that enhance the ability to display operational status and errors. The 1747-ASB is suitable for industrial environments and provides NEMA standard immunity.

For PLC application, the main purpose of this module is to realize distributed IO application through remote I/O network. This extension has limited cable length and very limited SLC chassis expansion compared to the SLC extension bus. For the 1747-ASB, up to 32 SLC cases with 1747 RIO scanners are available at distances of 230.4 kilobort 762 m or 2,500 ft, 115.2 kilobort 1524 m or 5,000 ft, and 57.6 kilobort 3048 m or 10,000 ft. The adapter has up to 30 control capabilities, and this 30-slot limit can be segmented into different cases or racks, each of which houses a RIO scanner and a power supply.

In addition to communicating with the remote IO scanner, the module can also be used to communicate with the Allen-Bradley Communications card installed directly on the personal computer. This enables remote programming and configuration capabilities as well as remote control through monitoring and Data acquisition (SCADA). Alternatively, Allen-Bradley human-machine interface (HMI) such as PanelView products are able to add remote I/O adapters, allowing HMI to control processes similar to SCADA systems.

The remote I/O adapter also supports communication with Allen-Bradley encompose partner products as well as third-party gateways and converters for third-party communication with other automation products.
