Figure 2 illustrates a three-axis PAM with SAM system. Many other configurationsare possible

depending on the specific requirements of an application. Mostmachine control systems include

a PC/PLC and an operator control station (Mll)for overall machine control. The following paragraphs

provide brief descriptions ofthe principal functions of each PAM with SAM system component.

The PAM (Programmable Axis Manager) is the system’s control and motioncoordination center.

PAM controls motion, l/0 and program flow as dictated by theapplication program under execution. PAM

may be linked to a host PC, PLC orfactory automation system for hierarchical control and reporting

using one of anumber of industry standard communications network interfaces. PAM is suppliedin

three packaging configurations, mounted in a rack, as module for insertion into aSimatic PLC and as an lSA board for direct installation in a PC.
EasyBus
This is a high speed fiber-optic bus that links PAM and all SAlM Drives in a closedring configuration for exchange of program, status l/O and motion information.

SAM Drive
The SAM Drive is a modern, high performance diaital motion controller with anintegral power stage. SAM Drives

execute motion, l/O and program tasks inresponse to data and commands from PAM, providing enhanced system

performance through distribution and sharing of system functions. SAM Drives areavailable with continuous power

output ratings of 1.5 up to 30 kVA for controllingAC servomotors, and other special purpose motors. Any SAM Drive may beoperated at 400 or 480 VAC.
SAM supply
The SAM Supply provides rectified DC power to each SAM Drive at a voltageproportional to the AC supply voltage. The

SAM Supplies are available in twoversions for operation at 400 and 480 VAC respectively
Motors
Motors convert electrical power from a SAM Drive to mechanical power. AC servomotors and other motor

types including linear and direct drive motors are readilyinterfaced with SAM Drives.
